In their article “Chipotle’s Junk Science,” authors Steven Sexton and David Zilberman claim, "More than two decades of research indicate that GMOs are not only safe for humans and the environment, but also contribute to global sustainability and poverty alleviation" (par. 1). Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as any animal, plant, or other organism whose genetic makeup has been manipulated in a laboratory using transgenic technology or genetic engineering. This combination results in genes that do not occur in nature or through conventional crossbreeding methods ("What Is a GMO?" par. 1). In other words, GMOs are organisms that have been intentionally engineered in order to display a desired outcome. Recently, GMOs have been a topic of heavy debate. Are they harmful to consume? Can they be related to illness? Do they help farmers or are they just a method of maximizing profit? Questions like these are often answered by misinformed civilians who know next to nothing about the reality of GMOs. Genetically modified organisms are beneficial to both farmers and consumers because they produce higher yields, help alleviate world hunger, and are safe.
